How do betting limits and market liquidity impact decisions punters make?

As you get into the world of profitable betting there are some key parts of how betting companies work that you need to learn. Two of the most important is understanding what are betting limits and market liquidity and how that impacts how much and when you should bet.

What are betting limits?

A betting limit is a pre-determined maximum bet that a bookmaker will allow on a specific market before reviewing or rejecting the bet. There are two types: market-level limits and account-level limits.

Market-level betting limits

For heavily betted markets like head to head, total points and handicaps, bookmakers are happy to take bigger bets. These are high liquidity markets where they confidently price and accept large two-sided action.

Player props are much lower liquidity. Bookmakers have lower limits on props because there is far more price volatility. For a given NBA match there can be 500+ props — there isn’t enough volume to support large stakes on each. Anything above $100-200 on a prop is considered a serious bet by most bookmakers.

Account-level betting limits

Within 2-4 weeks of opening an account, bookmakers will review your betting activity and profile your account. If they decide you’re sharp (i.e. you’ve made money), they may limit specific markets, sports, or your whole account. Common limits are $50 or $25 max winnings, sometimes as low as $1. Any successful punter will eventually get limited — it’s a sign you’ve made money.

How much should I bet?

It’s impossible to give a one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on how liquid the market is, which bookmaker you’re using, how far out the event is, your betting history, and your risk appetite. Key rules of thumb: if you’ve historically bet $5-10, suddenly placing $500 bets will immediately flag your account. Stakes on positive EV bets should match your normal betting history. Reduce stakes when betting far from an event start to avoid manual review.

At the end of the day, it’s a balancing act between keeping your account alive and getting enough volume down to make money. Book in a strategy call if you want a personalised plan.
